What motivates you

What motivates you?

Are you chasing the medal or the mastery?

At school, we see two kinds of fuel that drive success. They are both powerful, but one is a lot more sustainable!

Intrinsic Motivation (The Inner Fire): This is the drive that comes from inside you—the joy of finally smashing a tough Maths problem, the satisfaction of understanding that science lesson, or the pride in your own hard work. It's about personal growth, self-satisfaction, and genuine curiosity.

Extrinsic Motivation (The Reward Part): This is the motivation that comes from the outside—the high grade, the medal, the praise from your teachers, or that bit of pocket money for doing something round the house. It's a quick, powerful hit of dopamine, pushing you to perform!

You are driven by both, but one more than the other. What type of motivation fuels your brain?

The secret to long-term success in secondary school and in life is having a Growth Mindset and knowing that motivation is the fuel to get you started and Growth mindset is the thing that will keep you going.

When you trust the process, stop chasing perfection and start focussing on progress, you stop fearing failure and start seeing challenge as an opportunity.
