Children's University

The Children’s University (CU) Trust offers 7 to 14 year olds (and 5 to 6 year olds with their families) exciting and innovative learning activities and experiences outside normal school hours.

James Hornsby is currently working in partnership with 8 local primary schools to offer the opportunity to attend learning destinations to a wide range of age groups. As a school we have set up over 40 learning destinations across the county for all students to access as an individual or with their families.

Learning destination include; Wat Tyler Park, Chelmsford Museum, RSPB Discovery Zone, Transport Museum, Waterside Farm and Clacton Zoo. The programme is currently providing access to over 3000 students from the local primary schools.

This opportunity signposts the student to exciting learning activities which take place outside the normal school day – it could be before school, during lunchtime, after school, during weekends or holidays etc. The activities are all voluntary, it is up to the student to choose what they do and when.
The advantage of family involvement in the Children’s University learning is also immeasurable in terms of the Children’s University’s aim to turn dreams in to aspirations.

Each student accessing the programme has a passport. There are two types of passports; volunteering passport (year7.8&9) and leadership passport (year 10 & 11). When they attend an activity or assist in the leadership of an activity they must hand in their passport to the member of staff running the activity. The member of staff will date and stamp your passport.

At the end of each academic year students are invited to attend a graduation ceremony. The Graduation brings together the partnership of the schools across the Basildon District and also celebrates the students’ efforts and achievements throughout the year.
